Innovation in precision medicine for ALS
Cross-3DTool-4ALS is a cross-border cooperation project between the University of Coimbra and the University of Salamanca, aiming to develop an innovative precision medicine platform for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This rare and incurable neurological disease poses major challenges due to its heterogeneity and the lack of effective biological models.
Our focus
The project is based on a pioneering three-dimensional model using human motor neurons and skeletal muscle cells from the same patient, derived from urine-derived stem cells. This non-invasive, low-cost technology has the potential to revolutionise ALS diagnosis and treatment, fostering significant social and economic impact in the Castilla y León and Central Portugal regions.
