University of Coimbra (UC):

The Centre for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC) at the University of Coimbra is a leading European research centre combining fundamental and applied research in neuroscience and cell biology. Its interdisciplinary approach and extensive experience in international projects provide strategic value to the consortium. The CNC excels in developing advanced cellular models and exploring molecular mechanisms related to neurodegenerative diseases. It contributes to the project with its scientific expertise in developing three-dimensional human tissue models derived from stem cells, a key technology for this research, along with cutting-edge infrastructure enabling the manipulation of human cells and the design of physiologically relevant ALS models. Additionally, it facilitates knowledge transfer to the associated laboratories at the University of Salamanca, ensuring an efficient exchange of innovative technologies and methodologies.

University of Salamanca (USAL)

The University of Salamanca has a strong track record in scientific projects in the biomedical field, with a highly skilled research team and the necessary infrastructure to successfully develop research and transfer initiatives. Its Institute of Neurosciences of Castilla y León (INCYL) is a centre of excellence in nervous system research, ranging from basic biology to clinical applications.

In this project, USAL, through INCYL, contributes with the functional validation of the 3D models developed at CNC using advanced neurophysiological and cellular analysis techniques, its strong history of successful collaborations with Portuguese institutions strengthening the project’s strategic coordination, and access to specialised infrastructure for translational neuroscience research. Furthermore, support from the Research and Knowledge Transfer Office ensures efficient resource management and promotes technology transfer at regional and international levels.

Consortium

Biomedical Research Institute of Salamanca (IBSAL)

The Biomedical Research Institute of Salamanca is a leading institution in biomedical research, combining basic, clinical, and translational research in a unique environment. Its proximity to the Salamanca University Hospital enables the direct integration of research into clinical practice, enhancing the relevance and impact of the project.

IBSAL plays an essential role in this consortium through the ALS Unit of the Neurology Service, which centralises access to ALS patients and facilitates the collection of biological samples, ensuring the clinical validity of the developed models. Additionally, its ability to connect translational research with clinical practice drives the practical relevance of the obtained results, and its multidisciplinary team works closely with academic researchers in the consortium to maximise the project’s impact on patients.
